Carlo Maria Polvani was born in Milan in July 1965. He studied at the Leone XIII Institute (Milan) and the Collège Stanislas (Montreal). From the Department of Biochemistry of McGill University (Montreal) he received a degree (B.Sc.) in 1985 and a doctorate (Ph.D.) in 1990. He obtained a Master of Divinity in 1993 from the Weston Jesuit School of Theology (Cambridge, USA). After obtaining a License in Canon Law from the Pontifical Gregorian University, he specialized in Law and Forensic Psychology in 1996 and obtained a Doctorate in Canon Law in 1999. A student of the Pontifical Seminary of Lombardy (Rome), he was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Milan on February 14, 1998, and since 2013 he has been a Prelate of Honor of His Holiness. After attending the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy, he was admitted to the Diplomatic Service of the Holy See in July 1999 and sent to the Apostolic Nunciature in Mexico. As of 2001 he worked at the Secretariat of State as Head of the Information and Documentation Office and the Technical Office of the General Affairs Section, as well as representative of the Holy See in the Government Advisory Committee of the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Number (ICANN). In 2015, he was appointed Member of the Vatican Media Commission and of the Executive Committee on Information and Communication Technology of the Holy See. He is the author of many scientific articles. In addition to Italian, he is fluent in English, French, Spanish and German.
